On March 24th, representatives of the council and the consultants who conducted the survey of the burn last summer presented their findings and recommendations to the residents.
The slides presented are attached. In summary, the primary source of flooding is the culvert behind Levenhowe Road. This causes the water to back up when the burn gets high. Three potential solutions were identified. One had excessive costs, so the two recommended solutions were to remove the culvert and enhance some of the burn banks upstream.
It was agreed that the council would seek funding for the culvert removal as a first phase (as this presented the greatest benefit), followed by the bank enhancement at a later date. Estimation is that, based on current conditions, this would reduce the likelihood of a flood from the current (once every 10-15 years) to around once per 100 years.
The council team have agreed to pursue this for approval with a view to having the culvert removed next summer. This carries the support of council leader Martin Rooney and MSP Jackie Bailey.
